It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas

If you need help getting in the Christmas mood, I highly recommend watching Love Actually. This is one of my FAVORITE movies of all time. Here is one of my favorite scenes. The little boy learns to play the drums so he can be in the talent show with the girl he has a crush on. At the end of the song, she points to him while she sings, "All I want for Christmas is you!"

Back to it

I was ready to get back to it today. The kids have been fighting the last few days and we all needed to get back to our routine. We got to bed early, but the kids still wanted to sleep in late and watch a show. We don't watch TV on school mornings--both boys are just too slow in the morning. We need every last minute to get dressed, eat, brush our teeth, brush our hair and get out the dang door. Erik yelled at Pedar, "I want to watch a show" until his face turned red. Yeah for mornings--give me more of that!

We finally got the boys off to school and we were all in our places with shiny, happy faces. Around 2:40 p.m. I get a phone call from Mission DC. "Is Casey coming to DC today?"

I said, "Umm..yes. Where is he?"

"We're going to go walk around campus because he hasn't shown up yet," said DC coordinator.

"All right," I said a bit shaky and worried. "Let me call my Mom and make sure she didn't pick him up."

I called Nana. No Casey with Nana. Just then the school called and said Casey was in the office, a bit upset but fine. He thought I had the day off and was going to pick him up. Nope. I wait a few minutes to give him some time to walk back to DC with one of his teachers and then I call him. We chat for a few minutes. He sounded a little sensitive, but OK.

Can't wait to get to Casey tonight and SQUEEZE him. I hate the thought that he waited and no one came. Casey is back at DC now after school instead of at my Mom's and he's a bit confused. It will all work out eventually.

You know what these are??? Oh yeah--these are battery operated Christmas lights for our bikes!! We decorated our bikes with these lights. We took them out for a ride a few nights ago, but I still felt like we were a bit too dark, we all need bike lights and then we will be ready to roll about town in all of our Christmas glory!!

Happy Thanksgiving

It is Thanksgiving Eve and the boys are finally asleep. We are getting up early to meet everyone at Run to Feed the Hungry tomorrow. It should be a beautiful day. I am grateful for sunshine and healthy kids. It is no surprise why I am always a bit hesitant to drag my kids out in the rain for Run to Feed the Hungry when I think of our past

Tomorrow morning will be wonderful. We will spend the morning with family and friends and end the day at my parents house for more family time.

Casey's card and Erik's turkey

Casey's Thanksgiving Day message!
Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you have a fantastic day tomorrow. I feel so grateful to be in my cozy home with my super-hunky-husband and adorable snoozing children. I am grateful for the mess and the noise because that means I am a Mom and it is what I always wanted to be. I am grateful for my job, my co-workers, neighbors and friends. I am grateful for family, near and far. I am grateful that my family is healthy and happy. I am grateful for love.

Random Tuesday

1. My oak is not itching as much anymore!! My arms still look like I have leprosy-- but the kids are not as afraid to touch me. The itching has made me a bit crazy these past two weeks. I welcome an itch-less sleep!!

2. No school for boys means a bit more coordination on our part. Casey is hanging at Montessori with Erik today. All the little people just adore Casey.

3. Casey's parent/teacher conference was awesome!! We have quite a reader on our hands-- just needs a little more practice with math-- just like someone I know.

4. The only thing I asked Casey to do yesterday while he hung out with Nana, was to make his two soccer coaches thank you cards. Got home with ten minutes to spare before soccer party and asked him if he made the cards-- nope. One time out later and removal of favorite toys from his room--and two thank you notes were created. The best part of the night though was when he apologized to me for not making the cards and talking back!!! Can I get an Amen?!!

Adventures in Folsom

Last weekend the boys and I went to Folsom to explore. We hiked a bit and then Pedar took the boys to the train by the Folsom Zoo while I shopped at my favorite secondhand store, ReloveIt.

Ton of fisherman by the hatchery catching HUGE salmon. It was fun to watch.

It was a beautiful Monday. I LOVED being off of work. I am SO excited about having Thursday and Friday off!! Woo Hoo!!!

Thanksgiving Feast

Erik enjoyed a beautiful Thanksgiving Feast at his school yesterday. He loved it!! Nana picked him up early and took him to her house with Casey to enjoy the rest of his day. Thank you, Nana!!

We went to Matt and Erin's for dinner last night. The kids had the best time with Mark and Annie!

After dinner we all went to the movies to go see,"Wreck it Ralph." It was a cute movie and the kids did great. We couldn't all sit together because the movie was packed so towards the end of the movie Erik leans into me and says,"Where are our cousins?" So sweet!! Yes, they feel like cousins!!

Have a great weekend!!

Poison Oak

I should know better. I should have bathed in technu after our hike to Nevada City. But I haven't had poison oak in so many years--I forgot what an itchy, irritated mess it makes you! I started breaking out on my left arm on Wednesday. I got more on Thursday on my right arm and right hip and yesterday I found some behind my ear and left arm. AHHHHH! So, yesterday morning I made a mad dash to the doctor to load me up on steroids!! I've got cream and pills now! Yes, I have an arsenal. My left arm looks pretty bad this morning. I was going to wear a sleeveless dress to the wedding--so now I need to consider my oak options. Last night at the rehearsal dinner I wore a long sleeve top and by the end of the dinner I want to burn it!! The part that was covered was twice as red and puffy by the time we got home. What does it feel like? Ever had a scratch you can't itch, that doesn't go away? Yeah, like that. It is best to just keep distracting yourself. Fortunately yesterday we were so busy at work we barely had time to pee or eat so that helped me forget a bit about my itching. I had made up my mind to leave early on Friday and I still didn't get home till after 5 p.m. Oh well. Megan came over and we made it to the rehearsal by 6 p.m.

The rehearsal was fantastic and the dinner was delicious! Jeff and Megan's friends and family are so warm and friendly. We are EVEN more excited for today. Pedar is going to look so handsome in his tux!

I love my little dog Curly. He is always so happy to see me when I get home from work. He is also always SO excited when we get up in the morning. He is our little fluffy greeter. Curly has a great life. He is such a good dog that we can leave him inside the house all day. He has a dog door and can come and go as he pleases. Our couch is against the front window and he sits perched on the top of couch most of the day looking out at the neighborhood. I love seeing his little face in the front window.

Curly is nine years old. We got him when he was six-months-old. Pedar and I had been in our house for four months when I started to get the puppy itch. Everyone told me that before we had a baby we should have a puppy--you know as kind of a training of some sort. I just wanted a dog. I adopted a pomeranian puppy from the SPCA when I was 16-years-old. She costs $45. I used my money I made at Baskin Robbins to pay for her and her vet bills. She spent her last years with my parents, but I was with my Mom when we put her down. She was an incredibly smart and loving dog. Curly may not be as smart, I admit it, but he is sweet and loving and great with the kids.

How did we find Curly, you ask? The story goes something like this: I had been looking for a puppy that was part poodle. Pedar and I had gone to a few houses that advertised puppies in the paper (scary!!) and looked at maltapoo's and cockapoo's -- and they wanted a ton of money. We wanted something part poodle because they don't shed and I really like the stuffed animal come to life look! I wanted a fluffy puppy. I wanted a cuddly doggy. So, when Pedar was gone in Chicago for a work trip, I found an ad in the paper for lhasapoo's. I called and went to the seller's house in Lincoln and she only had two puppies, the rest were beagles and the lhasapoo's were six-months-old. She had traded with another breeder and had a special needs child and didn't get around to finding a buyer for the lhasapoo's. I was a bit disappointed that they weren't puppies, but I thought of Foxy being four-months-old when I got her and she was really easy to train.

Right away, I could tell Curly was sweet. I sat down on the kitchen floor and asked the puppies to come to me. Curly's sister barked at me. Curly cowered a bit, but he walked towards me wagging his adorable tail and then he curled up in my lap and kissed my hand. I couldn't write the check fast enough. I had a pet carrier in my car that my friend had given me. One very expensive trip to Petsmart later and Curly and I were home. Pedar was flying home that night and I couldn't wait to surprise him!

I was waiting with Curly at the house when Pedar called to tell me that he was in a hit-and-run accident. Some kids hit him and took off. He tried to follow them, but it was raining and dark and he gave up.

It was sad. Pedar's Grandma Dagny had given Leif and Pedar money to help with their weddings. Pedar used the money to help him buy the Subaru, because his Mazda was costing us a ton to keep it running. We got the Subaru fixed, but it turned out to be a bit of a money guzzler.

So, the poor traumatized, jet-lagged guy walks in the door and sees me holding a dog in my arms. Pedar looks at me and says, "Is it ours?" I say, "Yes, this is Curly!"

Pedar loved him immediately!
Dec. 4, 2003: Curly's adoption day! Doesn't Pedar have the BEST smile in the entire world??
We all love our Curlito. He is so great with the kids. He loves to hunt, he has killed two snakes and one squirrel. He loves to run the fence line with the neighbor dogs. We have dogs on either side of us so he takes turns running each fence line when those dogs are out. Unfortunately, Curly hates the car, so we don't take him much farther than to Nana's and back. He wasn't socialized much so he is  only good with my Mom's dog, Teddy. He is sweet though and we love him.

When I was on maternity leave with both my boys, Curly and I would walk with the babies everyday. He kept me company on some of my hardest days. I am so grateful to my little furfriend for his constant companionship and unconditional love.

Curly loves his Nana!! He is so lucky that he gets to stay at Camp Bailey when we are out of town! Thank you, Nana and Pop-Pop and Teddy for sharing your home with Curlito! You have made owning a dog SO much easier!!

After his first haircut he looked like a different dog! Curly had terrible ear infections when we got him. Poor baby needed a lot of medicine in the beginning. Thank goodness we didn't have kids!

Curly used to follow me everywhere. Not so much now!

Lila and Liam LOVE walking Curly!  After looking through our pictures I realized I don't have a family picture with Curly. I will be fixing that very soon!!  Well, that's it, I just wanted to tell you about my furbaby. Have a great night. Pedar is away on a work trip for two nights and I cannot wait till tomorrow night to RELAX. Getting everyone up and out the door on time and in our places with shiny-happy-faces, isn't easy!! I admire the hell out of single working Mom's.  We have the wedding rehearsal Friday night for Jeff and Megan. Pedar is the best man and I am giving a reading. Our beautiful cousin Megan is watching the boys on Friday and Mor Mor and Pop-Pop are watching them OVERNIGHT on Saturday!!! They are so EXCITED!! THANK YOU Megan and especially THANK YOU to Mor-Mor and Pop-Pop for watching the boys overnight. We are so looking forward to an evening ALONE. I am so looking forward to the wedding on Saturday too! I LOVE weddings!!! Have a great weekend everyone!!

We are more alike than unalike

In all my work what I try to say is that as human beings we are more alike than we are unalike.

Thank you

Sunday evening Pedar ran to Whole Foods to get coffee. He didn't just bring coffee home though, he brought me beautiful flowers. He wanted to bring a smile to my face.

I've been feeling a bit overwhelmed lately. I just feel like we never have enough time, money or energy to get anything done. We get home late every evening, rush around with the kids and then fall into bed exhausted. The house is dirty. Our couch is falling apart, our master bathroom needs work, we have lots of chipped paint, peeling linoleum in the kitchen and so much more.

I want to know about the darn house we put an offer on two months ago--but then again I worry that even if we do get it--we won't be able to fix it the way we'd love to because of lack of funds. My fear is that we will be in it for ten years like our current house-- before we have the money and time to make it how we want.

I wasted a few good hours this weekend wishing for money in our savings and the time and motivation to get stuff done. And then you know what, I snapped out of it! I have to stop wasting time on these kind of "rich man problems" like Adam Carolla jokes about. Not having money for new furniture or a fancy vacation or a new kitchen is not a problem! Not having a roof, health insurance or food for my family IS a problem and I have those items covered. So--we are doing really well and everything else will come, and maybe it won't--and I will be OK with that.

They say that people remember how you made them feel, not how your house looked or the way you were dressed or if you dye your own hair. So, I'm going to focus on making those that I love feel GOOD.
Lauren from the Catherine Tate show says it best: I can't be bovvered. I have so much to be grateful for.
