On the road again

Today we are driving to Portland! We are already in Williams. We left the house around 6 a.m. We just bundled the kids up in their pajamas and took off. Our tire light just came on so we've stopped to check it. We hope to get there by 4 p.m. today. Thank you, Margery for taking care of curly and our house.

Hope everyone has a great Wednesday!

Thrift shop like a boss!

My talented friend Jill started a new website recently called Cap City Moms. This is a project she has been thinking about for a long time. It is super cool to watch your friends make their goals a reality. I'm very proud of Jill and know she is going to do great things with this new website.

Here is what Jill wrote to explain what it is all about:
Cap City Moms is a group of Mothers who love everything from Legos to LancĂ´me and who just so happen to live in the Sacramento Valley. We believe that being a mom is the best and hardest job around. And because no mom should go it alone, we are building a kick-ass community online and off. Did we mention we love your shoes? And your hair looks really pretty.

Jill asked me to write two articles for Cap City Moms and because I love her, I jumped at the chance to support her. She asked me to write about thrift shopping, because I love to gush about my super fantastic finds. And then she asked me to write a Q&A about Covered California.

I look forward to writing more for Cap City Moms because I know that any project with Jill is going to be a good time!! Thank you, Jill!

Cousin loving

So yesterday, after church and Sunday school and a mad cleaning session, we hosted my Bailey family to come over so could take family pictures. Pedar and I were out at a Wells Fargo work party the night before until midnight, so it was a miracle that we made it to 9 a.m. service--but we did it!!! The kids are enjoying their classes after service. They are making friends and learning songs. St. John's has terrific children's programs.

Margery, Art and Rita are moving in two weeks to Mexico so we really wanted to get everyone together to take a picture with all the kids so we can capture their precious tiny faces. Oh, and we wanted pics of the adults too.
This was probably the best one. I wish Rita was looking forward, but it will have to do! Pedar set up the tripod and we would tell the kids to look into the circle and smile!!
This is one of the best of all the grandkids! I just loaded them to my computer and will share more soon. We had a great time after our picture session. The kids ran wild in our big driveway and I think every adult tried the green machine. If you don't have one, I would put it on your shopping list. Hours of playtime have been had on ours and it is sure way to make you smile and make you feel like a kid again!!

Gobble gobble

Casey is loom crazy! He made this mustache for Movember!

Last night Casey had a sleepover at a friends house. We had Todd, Susan and their precious baby Emily over for dinner. What a happy baby!! Erik enjoyed being the only big kid! We had the best time playing battleship.

Just kidding!!
Doesn't he remind you of Monica from friends??

Just two things

Two things have made me very happy lately and I wanted to share them with you because maybe they will make you happy.
Here she is! The Bissel PowerEdge Pet Hard Floor Vacuum. Our house is all hardwood, except for the tile in the bathrooms. We are able to use this little beauty on our area rugs as well as the floors. This vacuum is awesome!!
Look what she can do!! We look forward to vacuuming because it is so gratifying to see what it picks up! Love it! It's really light too so the boys are able to easily push it.
The second item I want to tell you about is this cream! It is called Organic Skincare Doctor, Rescue Cream, Manuka Honey. Buy it here.

I have eczema around my eyelashes, my eyelids and neck. As soon as we turn the heat on, or if I try a new eye shadow, eye makeup remover, lotion or anything that is not for sensitive skin - because I like to torture myself (Or is it because I'm an idiot and think my eczema actually went away??) my eyelids get red, swollen, scabby and itchy. I end up pulling half my eyelashes out, because it just feels so damn good and when I wake up in the morning I look like I've cried all night. I can't wear makeup for a few days while I moisturize the skin around my eyes and without makeup I just look tore up. I am pale and have small features and I really NEED my face on. But now I have this amazing "rescue" cream and the skin around my eyes looks so much better! It is awful waking up at night because your eyes itch so bad. I hate it! Now the key is to actually use the cream and not just for two days, but all the time. That is where I always go wrong. Hoping this cream can help me have a happier winter!

An attitude of gratitude

Erik's teachers asked the kids to dress fancy today because they are having their Thanksgiving feast. Erik decided the sweater vest wasn't enough, so he put on a tie too! Seeing him so dressed up makes me want to buy him more fancy clothes!!

My very thoughtful friend and her daughter have been making bags of goodies to hand out to the homeless in our community. I love this idea. I want to encourage my sons to always consider the needs of others. My family is going to put together these goody bags this weekend and keep them in the car so we are ready to help. I know the boys will LOVE spreading some joy this Holiday season. I hope it is something we keep up throughout the entire year.

If you haven't seen this video--please watch. It takes very little effort or time to help someone.

Recently my beautiful sister Dagny, invited me and two other amazing women (Katie and Jenna) to Wine, Women and Shoes, a benefit for St. John's Women and Children's Shelter. It was a beautiful event and we had a wonderful time sipping wine and shopping.

Right before we sat down for the fashion show, I noticed two of the gentlemen who had been parading around selling designer shoes, were getting their picture taken. They looked very serious and were being told how to pose, etc. Something came over me and I just had to photobomb them! I didn't think Sacramento Magazine would run my crazy picture--but as I was looking at pictures from the event, I found a picture of my impulsive moment.
Super FUN!

It rained last night. It is finally feeling like Fall!
Erik drew this adorable turkey! I love four-year-old artwork! Nine more months and Erik will be in Kindergarten.
Casey loves Curlito so much!
I love him too!
Look at his sweet face! Thank you God, for the unconditional love that dogs give to their people. I LOVE coming home to Curly. He greets me so happily and sweetly. I love how he trades off sleeping with the boys throughout the night and then he comes to his bed to sleep in our room for a little bit. It's like he wants to give everyone in our house a little bit of his attention. Such a little crumb cake.

Yesterday, Erik and I went to Bannon's 4th Birthday party in Davis. Our weather has been so gorgeous!! It is so warm.
I planned the boys birthday parties this week and ordered Christmas cards from Walgreens. December comes on like a freight train and I don't want to feel so anxious that I can't enjoy the festivities!

I put away my summer clothes yesterday and unpacked my sweaters and wintery things. I love the habitual preparation for a new winter season. I'm looking forward to decorating at our new house and making new memories.

Pedar and I attended the feast for WEAVE last night. We enjoyed great company and a five course meal at Mulvaney's. We had to sneak out at 9 p.m. to get home to the kids, but we had a great time! Thank you Mom and Dad for letting us drop off the kids for a few hours!

Hope you have a great Sunday!

Hats + 80 degrees = sweaty head

It was 80 degrees today in Sacramento. I wish it would rain and turn colder. I want to bake and feel cozy wozy. I'm done with being hot.

The boys have been fighting nasty colds all week. I rushed out of work early so I could get them home before dark and push liquids into them. We stopped off at whole foods for some supplies and they fell in love with these adorable winter hats. I was weak and bought them. It's hard when you're kids are wheezing and snotty!! That's my excuse today at least. But my goodness, just look at these adorable hats!! Now we just need some cold weather so we can wear them!!

Yeah, it's completely normal in California to wear shorts and a winter hat!
This poor dude has a terrible red mustache from wiping his runny nose constantly!
Thank you, whole foods for the awesome hats! You made my sickies feel better!!

Happy Birthday, Gavin!

Before his birthday is over, we wanted to take a moment and wish our sweet cousin Gavin a Happy Birthday!!
We love you, dude! Hope you have a fantastic year!!!

Baked Zucchini Fries

I made baked zucchini fries last night and they were so delicious. Not a single one was leftover!! I used a recipe a lot like this one, so feel free to copy hers!

  • 8 zucchini
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup dried bread crumbs
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 6 fresh basil leaves or 1 tsp. dried basil
  • Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste
  • 3 eggs
  • Pan spray
  • Grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese
     for sprinkling

1. Quarter the zucchini lengthwise, then cut each quarter in half crosswise-you'll know if the size looks right! Remove the seeds from the top of the zucchini--just slice them off with a knife, it keeps it crisper, the seeds soften the fries.
2. Separate the yolk from the eggs white (using your hands works best) then whip up the egg whites in a bowl.
3. Dip the zucchini in the flower first, then the egg white, then dip in the bread crumbs. Add the garlic and basil to the bread crumbs and mix it all up.
4. Put zucchini on cookie sheet. I sprayed the cookie sheet with pan spray first. Sprinkle with salt and pepper.

Bake at 425 for about 12 minutes each side or until brown. Spray zucchini with a little pan spray before and after flipping.

The final two-three minutes in the oven, switch oven to broil and sprinkle with Parmesan to make it cheesy deliciousness!

Makes about 32 zucchini sticks. Serve with ranch or fancier dip--your choice!

Let there be light....

Thank you so much to Greg Judd, our friend and talented electrician who took away our living rooms cave status this weekend. We have seven beautiful LED can lights. They all can be  dimmed and have different switches-- it's so awesome. We feel so fancy!!
Before lights we only had the table lamp and the small light in the TV cabinet. This is how dark our living room looked in the day time. Thank goodness for lights!
Our boys are both snotty and coughy and we pray we haven't passed it on to Rita or anyone else! This weekend was good-- but I wish the boys had felt better and I wish they didn't cough so much at night!! Is it mean of me to complain that I just want them to sleep soundly??
We took Rita to the park today and Art and Pedar enjoyed a long bike ride. We're just trying to visit with them as much as we can before they move.
I enjoyed a quiet walk this morning with just Erik and Curly. Pedar and Casey were at the dentist. I love having time with just one boy. No interrupting each other or fighting. Ah, so nice.

I hope you all stay healthy and enjoy this gorgeous weather! Sweet dreams! Go to sleep, you really can't sleep when you're dead, you need it now!!!

Time with Rita

We were able to play with Rita a little bit this week. Darn work and school got in the way, but we look forward to more time before they move. We all love getting to know Rita's little personality and we love spending time with Art and Margery too!

 Rita can be very intense!
I'm so happy that I got some cousin bath pictures!!
I trimmed her sharp little nails, she is so very squirmy.
